Jazz Up Close

Jazz Up Close In-Person

Resonant Motion, Inc. presents saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Mike McGinnis to discuss his original compositions in an intimate trio accompanied by Henry Lugo on bass and host and series curator Noah Baerman on piano.

Mike McGinnis is a musical explorer unbound by stylistic barriers, unwaveringly individual, curious, and open-minded. His penchant for experimentation has led him to work with an eclectic array of artists, performing with jazz innovators like Anthony Braxton, Alice and Ravi Coltrane, Hank Roberts, Steve Coleman, and Lonnie Plaxico, with indie rock mainstays Yo La Tengo, and in the Tony-winning show Fela!, while being recognized for his straight-ahead jazz credentials with multiple placements in the Clarinet  “Rising Star” category by the DownBeat magazine international critics poll.

His expansive discography as a bandleader includes two acclaimed albums with an all-star trio featuring pianist Art Lande and bassist Steve Swallow and multiple large-ensemble albums and extended compositions. His multidisciplinary interests have resulted in projects including the Ängsudden Song Cycle, inspired by the work of Filipino-American visual artist MuKha, composing music for multiple films, and music for the choreography of his wife, acclaimed dancer/choreographer, Davalois Fearon, premiered at the Joyce Theater in January 2016.
