Georgiana, Like So Many in Middlesex County with author Claire Smith In-Person

What was life like for a Middlesex County woman in the years 1849 to 1930, an era of unprecedented change for the nation, for Connecticut and for women?

Come hear about Georgiana Smith Cook who, like so many women during her time, experienced the Civil War and then the post-war boom of inventions, new transportations, new communications, and new laws that dramatically expanded their worlds. Learn how many women – those who listened while other women’s voices grew louder and louder about issues such as Prohibition, suffrage, property rights, and opportunities – did not become activists, but were thinking, thinking, thinking.

Featured in this talk are stories about Georgiana’s life in Middletown, East Haddam, Haddam, Chester, and Westbrook.

Author Claire Smith is a Westbrook resident who lives in what used to be Georgiana’s summer cottage. She is the author of three books. For Georgiana, Like So Many, she won a 2023
Connecticut Society of Genealogists Literary Award.
